Description

Official Selection, 2016 Cannes Film Festival

Seok-woo is about to receive a crash-course in parenting. And in making a shield, and in securing a door from attackers, and in improvising things you can do with a cell phone. That’s because it’s his young daughter’s birthday, they’re on a train to visit her preferred parent (mom) in Busan, and zombies are attacking, gnawing their way up the train car by car, neck by neck. Seok-woo is used to managing his daughter the way he uses his clients as a fund manager: by treating everyone as a transaction, by bullying fear and uncertainty, and by pulling side-deals to get what he wants. Today though is the zombie apocalypse. The world outside the train is going down in flames. The only thing real is making sure the little girl holding his hand makes it to Busan alive.

With the international box office sensation TRAIN TO BUSAN, director Yeon Sang-so (The King of Pigs, SDAFF ’12) makes his live-action feature debut, but paints the zombie uprising with the eye of an animator: swarms of the undead crashing through windows and dropping out of the sky, the kinetics of broken limbs flapping forward from background to middle-ground to in-the-face of an unsuspecting victim. And as in Yeon’s dark, gritty animated films, TRAIN TO BUSAN is mad as hell and isn’t afraid to name the real monsters of society: those who defend selfishness on the grounds of self-preservation, the capitalists so drunk on “survival of the fittest” that they’re no better than zombies themselves. Funny, horrific, and pumped with here-we-go energy, TRAIN TO BUSAN is Korean cinema’s most entertaining ride in years. –Brian Hu
