Move over football, badminton is the true contact sport. In this manically-paced action sports film from Hong Kong, a ragtag bunch of disgraced champions, thieves, and drunkards overcome their own past demons to find victory on the international stage. To do so it will take a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and vomit.
Led by a former superstar named “Beast” Ng (Josie Ho), the team gets a second chance at redemption by reconciling the violence of their past and channeling it on the court. Things get messy along the way, including more than one bloody standoff at center court thanks especially to a coach who likes to teach the game using butcher’s knives.
Directors Derek Kwok (Gallants) and Henri Wong mash up genres at will to create a heightened aesthetic. This is no quaint time at the movies. FULL STRIKE bombards you with color and movement, operating at a gloriously extreme level where gravity and logic are no longer tangible. The wacky cast of characters realizes that complete control is only a delusion. Theirs is a game with a single defining mantra: respect the shuttlecock. –Glenn Heath
