Star actress Go Joo-yeon (Kim Hye-soo) is wanting for nothing, from her fresh wardrobe, to her killer bod, to her serial acquisition of young celebrity boyfriends. Joo-yeon has the perfect life… until she realizes she doesn’t. Meanwhile, Dan-ji, a newly-pregnant teenager and aspiring artist (Kim Hyun-soo) grapples with the coldness of her resentful older sister. Joo-yeon’s dream of having a family by her side unconditionally, and Dan-ji’s dream of a future less bleak than the present, collide when fate, ego, and a crazy idea bring them together.
What ensues is a bright and punchy Korean comedy that pulls few emotional punches while consistently delivering laughs. Kim Hye-soo’s versatility and breakneck energy make for riveting chemistry with rising star Kim Hyun-soo, who refuses to be outshone by the veteran actress. True to its name, FAMILYHOOD raises an abundance of questions surrounding gender roles and non-traditional families while centering multiple female characters in all of their complexities. –Jumanah Albahri
