Description

Official Selection, 2015 Hong Kong International Film Festival
Best Director, 2015 Taipei Film Festival

Tsai Ming-liang continues to roam the world with the seventh installment in his Walker series: NO NO SLEEP. Once again, Lee Kang-sheng is dressed as a monk, moving at a snail’s pace navigating various urban landscapes. This time, the backdrop is Tokyo at night, and for followers of the series, there are additional surprises ahead.

As in all of Tsai’s films, NO NO SLEEP is a carefully-crafted work in defiance of conventional cinema, at the same time resurrecting cinema from its slumber. The film is a feast for the eyes, humorously juxtaposing Lee Kang-sheng’s sedate motion with the movement of a train and its passenger, each heading in polytemporally to the same destination: a bathhouse.

Tsai captures the beautiful lines of abstraction, following the fast motion of the train that mimics the lines of the railings of the overpass and buildings that surrounds the monk in slow motion. The beauty of the Walker series doesn’t just come from Tsai’s meticulously-composed framings or his use of light and color, but in the way it captures the spectacle of spaces, figures, movement, and time, a package of mysteries with each installment. –Joseph Mangat
