Industrious and savvy tech entrepreneur Neal Kumar appears to have it all. He’s reached the pinnacle of his career, has an enviable reputation, and has attained a prosperous life for his family in spite of humble origins. But his daughter’s untimely death cuts his Silicon Valley success story short, leading him on a reckless quest to discover the truth behind her demise, making vulnerable his already-shaky relationships with family and colleagues.
Director Saila Kariat’s feature film debut pits wealth and social standing against the relationships so easily taken for granted in the rise to grandeur. As the faltering patriarch, Alyy Khan conveys the misguided affection of a father who opens wounds he may not have known were there. Suchitra Pillai as Neal’s wife, Roopa, brings complexity and heartache to a home swollen with competition and high expectations. Through shards of a family broken along generational and gender lines, THE VALLEY is a searing deconstruction of the myths of immigrant success. –Malou Amparo Robas
