In an effort to come to peace with her turbulent past, Huang Hui-chen seeks to learn about the woman who raised her. The subject is the family’s open secret, one that the mother has kept shrouded for decades but which Huang has become tired of ignoring: that her mother is a lesbian. Huang decides to address it head on, with her camera. Through interviews with her mother, her family members, and her mother’s past lovers, we slowly begin to unravel an unspoken past.

It is only after long periods of uncomfortable silence that Huang’s mother finally reveals the sacrifices she made for her children and why she never spoke about them in the first place. A documentary that explores and pays tribute to the minds of mothers, SMALL TALK shows us that silence doesn’t always mean distance; sometimes it means sparing the people around you the pain you feel yourself. –Aleya Zenieris
