Becoming an adult can be cruel, confusing, and comedic – often all at once. Joyce Wong’s debut feature WEXFORD PLAZA follows two characters going down that path, sometimes together, sometimes in conflict, and always brimming awkwardly with false security.
In the parking lot of a dreary strip mall in the middle of Canadian suburbia, we discover Betty (Reid Asselstine), a newly-hired security guard who’s having trouble connecting with her co-workers, leading to a tired loneliness and the grim feeling of being eternally out of place. Her world changes when she meets the resident bartender Danny (Darrel Gamotin) at a nearby drinking hole and a friendly bond forms between them. After an overnight affair, their lives spiral onto two opposite roads leading to discord and misunderstanding.
Director Joyce Wong skillfully shows us how an innocent encounter can change the lives of those involved, and does so with a fresh and delightful feel for narrative structure. –Eric Lallana
