Description

Audience Award, 2006 Tribeca Film Festival
Grand Jury Award, 2007 San Diego Asian Film Festival

Artist Jimmy Mirikitani spent WWII in Tule Lake, the following decades in art circles with Jackson Pollock, an indeterminate number of years on the streets of New York City, and the post-9/11 months finding renewed purpose and opportunity. That’s when he befriended filmmaker Linda Hattendorf, who asked questions about Jimmy’s art, his family, and his relationship to a country that turned its back on him.

The resulting documentary is an affirming portrait of a man who resisted by retreating to a world of his own and by putting paint to canvas, projecting a vision of peace under the dark clouds of two wars. –Brian Hu
