Sweet 20’s Miu Le plays Oanh, every employee’s worst nightmare, the sort of boss whose commands are followed by thunder, and whose mascara is sharp enough to cut insubordinate workers by day the way it cuts insubordinate lovers by night. But her thorny mandates come around to prick her when she and her employee Cuong violate Oanh’s own cardinal rule prohibiting intra-office romance. Since she’s as principled as she is competitive, Oanh suggests she and Cuong turn a company project into a wager: loser has to quit.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of a plot that also involves a possibly-fake crocodile and an ATM that spits out free money. At the comedy plate, director Ham Tran (How to Fight in Six Inch Heels) swings hard and often, delivering a frantically energetic film with spunky slapstick, a carbonated soundtrack of pops and whips, tireless music gags, and costumes of every color, pattern, and inspiration. Unhinged and free-flying, while still cohering a compelling battle-of-the-sexes across work and home, SHE’S THE BOSS is Tran’s best commercial work to date and a splashy showcase for some of Vietnam’s most radiant comedic talents. –Brian Hu
