Everything is adding up for Anne. She assists one of the top fashion designers in New York and she’s engaged to the loving Kiet, who is coming up in the telecommunications world. Then, the bombshell. His latest promotion takes him on a stint to Saigon, and for Anne, having to wonder if her fiancé is doing more than just cavorting with supermodels in Vietnam was definitely not in her life plans. And so she packs up her bags and plots to rein in her man.
Anne’s romp to Vietnam, and the topsy-turvy catwalk hijinks that ensue, make HOW TO FIGHT IN SIX INCH HEELS a radical departure for director Ham Tran (Journey from the Fall, SDAFF ’06). And yet this is Tran, and the Viet Wave more generally, at its most versatile and energetic. With the help of producer-actress Kathy Uyen, Tran fashions a high-energy transnational rom-com that struts the prowess of global Vietnamese talent and further expands the universe of Asian American storytelling. –Brian Hu
