For city-dweller Jayesh, a family reunion in the town of Ahmedabad is a return to a past life, an upbringing with its buried secrets and half-forgotten conflicts. For his daughter Priya, it is a simple world of possibility and casual love. For director Prashant Bhargava, it is a kaleidoscopic array of color and textures set off by the annual kite festival, which provides the backdrop for his tale of family histories and personal desires. PATANG has a wondrous way of observing its characters and their situations, never dwelling on exposition, and just letting the intimacy and sensuality of everyday life reveal pages of drama about relationships and class in contemporary India. As Roger Ebert writes, “This film is joyous, but more than that: it is lovely in its construction….And it flies as free and colorfully as a kite."
