LEARNING, THE
Description
The struggling public school system in Baltimore needs teachers. In an act of desperation (and inspiration), they hire wide-eyed and ambitious teachers from the Philippines, where a century ago, American colonial interests brought the English language and western-style schooling. THE LEARNING follows Dorotea, Angel, Grace, and Rhea in their first year teaching American high school, during which they seek to educate and inspire largely inner-city African American youth, and in the process, receive a learning of their own. A fresh look at migrant labor, culture clash, and the American public school system, THE LEARNING documents the emotional stakes – and ironies – of working hard and getting ahead.
