A SIMPLE LIFE added to the Spring Showcase!
Just when you thought the Spring Showcase couldn’t get any better, we went ahead and added Ann Hui’s magisterial A SIMPLE LIFE, the best Hong Kong film of 2011. No scratch that: the best of Hong Kong film of the decade so far. Or according to TIME OUT HONG KONG: the 28th best Hong Kong movie of all time. And it had barely been in theaters a week!
A SIMPLE LIFE is that kind of movie. You see it and you want to tell your friends about it, you want to see it again, and you want to proclaim it a modern classic. As a film festival programmer, I’m lucky to see everything once because there are so many Asian films on the international festival circuit. But I saw this one twice. Then I named it the fourth best film of 2011 for Senses of Cinema. Now I’m bringing it to San Diego. Yeah, it’s that kind of movie.
Sharing closing night status with ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA, the film will ensure that Thursday, April 26 will be an all-star night of festivities. But to make sure everyone gets a chance to see it, we’re throwing A SIMPLE LIFE in on Wed, April 25 as well.
Not sold yet? A SIMPLE LIFE also has 2011’s most acclaimed performance. Remember how no frontrunners emerged for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars? It’s because the voters didn’t see Deannie Yip’s performance. She took the Best Actress crown at the Venice Film Festival last fall, and has been sweeping every award since, from the Asian Film Awards this month to the prestigious Golden Horse Awards. And she does it without the usual dramatic histrionics, instead bringing out comedic quivers of joy and compassion. This is a performance for the ages.
A SIMPLE LIFE plays Wed, April 25, 8pm and Thurs, April 26, 5:30pm. Don’t miss it.
